Frost & Sullivan Recognizes Eaton Corporation’s Three-Phase UPS with 2008 North America Award for Product Innovation

Palo Alto, Calif … Based on its recent analysis of the U.S. three-phase uninterruptible power supply (UPS) market, Frost & Sullivan has recognized Eaton Corporation with the 2008 North American Frost & Sullivan Award for Product Innovation for Eaton’s 9395 three-phase UPS. Ranging from 225 to 1100 kVA, Eaton’s 9395 UPS product launched in 2007 and provides power protection to large data centers, manufacturing operations, medical facilities and other large mission-critical applications that cannot afford downtime due to power outages. The 9395 extends traditional protection by integrating the capabilities of a redundant multi-module UPS system into an integrated, factory pre-wired solution.

The launch of the 9395 was part of Eaton’s strategy to introduce transformer-less UPS technology throughout the company’s three-phase product portfolio. The company’s continued commitment to innovation is reflected in the product’s key technological features.

“The 9395 is the newest addition to Eaton’s global platform strategy aimed at protecting mission-critical equipment anywhere in the worldwide electrical infrastructure,” says Frost & Sullivan industry manager, Vishal Sapru. “Transformer-less technology offers multiple benefits such as space and footprint savings, cost savings and increased energy efficiency.”

The 9395 offers several key advantages. A transformer-less UPS unit dispenses with the large input rectifier/charger transformer or output transformer, reducing component cost. This design allows facilities to save energy costs because the UPS operates at high efficiency across a wider load range, even at low or partial load levels. As an added benefit, more efficient operation generates less heat, thereby reducing the overall air conditioning capacity requirement.

“Transformer-less design gives Eaton the ability to provide better power performance. Low input power distortion indicates it is generator-friendly while high output power factor provides more kilowatt (kW) capacity than most competitors,” notes Sapru. “This is extremely important for data centers to utilize the full capacity of their electrical infrastructure investment.”

The 9395 provides unmatched energy efficiency of 99 percent using Eaton’s new Energy Saver Mode technology. The system combines the three critical elements used to measure power performance of a UPS – system efficiency, output power factor and total harmonic distortion (THD). Additionally, unlike most UPS systems, the 9395 does not require input filters to obtain less than a three percent input THD. A difference of just two percent in efficiency for a typical 550 kVA application, for example, could provide significant electrical savings in addition to lower overall facility cooling capacity.

The 9395 offers other comparative advantages, including additional redundancy without adding another UPS module along with associated power and control wiring. It is a double-conversion UPS that isolates critical output power from all input power anomalies so that the power provided to downstream equipment is constantly conditioned and regulated. Another key 9395 feature is its inherent redundancy option. It can be configured to become inherently redundant when the UPS is operating at 50 percent or below its capacity, providing built-in redundancy and increased reliability without adding a second UPS.

Adding reliability to this system, the design includes Eaton’s patented Hot Sync® technology. In configurations with more than one uninterruptible power module, this feature enables the modules to share the load equally yet operate independently. Moreover, the 9395 is fully compatible with the proven Static Auto Tie (SAT) system architecture, which allows full load transfers to be done autonomously to protect critical loads and eliminates the need for downstream static transfer switches. The 9395 design provides scalability in meeting future changing requirements in load demand by allowing another uninterruptable power module to be added later for capacity or redundancy. The end result is an integrated multi-module system that is easy to install yet flexible enough for future expansion.
