Eaton Launches Marine Industry’s Most Advanced UPS Range

8 to 40kW UPS range is specially engineered for shipping applications to protect ships, crew and cargo

ESPOO, FINLAND – …Power management company Eaton today announced a new range of advanced Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) for shipping and offshore applications. Eaton 93PS Marine is a state-of-the-art 8-40 kW three-phase UPS that is engineered to withstand the harsh environments at sea and to protect onboard functions. The latest range provides the marine industry with the most advanced functionality available and is designed to be the easiest to deploy and maintain, as well as the most economic to operate. A key innovation is the Hot Swap design, which gives crews the autonomy to service the UPS themselves, which is vital when at sea for months. The new range will be available from the end of Q4 2017.

The Eaton 93PS Marine UPS range supports critical onboard applications and processes, such as navigation, communication, bridge equipment and automation, and lighting as well as providing auxiliary power for engines and safety systems. It is built to meet and exceed industry standards for high availability and low total cost of ownership. The new Marine UPS range has a designed lifetime of over 15 years, 24/7 operation, equal to 130,000 hours of continuous use. Depending on the model’s power rating and load level, Eaton estimates that a unit could save a ship operator as much as €35,000 during its lifetime, compared to a legacy UPS.

“Eaton has been building marine UPSs for over 40 years. We first started designing systems for Finnish ice-breakers, which operate in some of the world’s most extreme conditions,” said Esko Sorva, Product Manager at Eaton. “We are building on this experience to deliver systems that are proven to be robust and that reinforce our position as the leading marine UPS manufacturer.”

The Eaton 93PS Marine range features Eaton’s market-leading technologies to enable the lowest total cost of ownership. The range uses Eaton’s Energy Saver System (ESS), which is the fastest-reacting energy saver architecture available, to reach up to 99% efficiency, enabling even higher energy savings and lower total cost of ownership. The new models also feature best-in-class double conversion efficiency of up to 96%.

The Eaton 93PS Marine UPS contains a variety of features that make it easier for ship builders and crew to deploy, manage and maintain. These include:

  • Hot Swap power modules, which enables comprehensive servicing to be done simply and efficiently by a ship or offshore crew
  • Variable Module Management System (VMMS), which increases system efficiency, even when UPS load levels are low, by automatically bringing modules online or stand-by
  • Advanced Battery Management (ABM) increases the lifetime of the battery system and automatically monitors its health.

Eaton has also focused on simplifying the design-in and installation of the UPS. The option to use internal transformers, which are pre-installed and factory-tested, can reduce the footprint and cabling work onboard of the UPS by 50%, while its modular design enables inherent redundancy and hardware upgrades to meet future power demands. Eaton also provides 3D design resources that make it easier for ship builders and system integrators to design-in the UPS. Furthermore, each UPS is equipped with a lifting tool for easier manoeuvrability at the shipyard.
