Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

Taking account of the environment is a part of the design process at Eaton. Four characteristics guide the design team during their work: energy efficiency, resource efficiency, recycling and compliance with regulations. The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) process is used to gather information about the potential environmental impact of a product. This process takes place on selected products and assessments adhere to the ISO 14040/14044 standards.

Substances and Materials

RoHS Directive (2011/65/EU): Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment

The Directive applies to electrical and electronic products and restricts the use of some substances, such as heavy metals and certain flame retardants in homogenous materials. Eaton has a proactive approach to environmental legislation and as such is seeking to comply with the RoHS Directive in advance of it becoming a legal requirement to do so.

RoHS status per product can be found under EC DoC.

REACH Regulation (EC 1907/2006): Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of Chemicals

The Regulation applies to all electrical products and aims to reduce the use of hazardous chemicals in manufacturing. Eaton is constantly monitoring the use of substances that fall under the REACH Regulations in its manufacturing processes. To the best of our knowledge, our products do not contain SVHCs (Substances of Very High Concern) and if those substances are ever discovered above the threshold limit we will communicate it to our customers as required.

To gather substances and materials information about our UPS standard IEC 62474 (Material Declaration for Products of and for the Electrotechnical Industry) is used as guideline.

International Committees and Organisations

Eaton demonstrates its commitment to protecting the environment through its involvement in IEC standardisation (International Electrotechnical Commission) committees, regulation research studies and non-profit activities such as the Green Grid organisation and the Energy Star programme.

Energy Saver System (ESS)

The ESS enables extremely high energy efficiency and reliability under normal operating conditions where the load is fed through a static bypass switch. The UPS itself (the rectifier and inverter) is only engaged when the mains power either fails or deviates from pre-set limits in terms of voltage or frequency. Eaton products offer extremely high energy efficiencies compared to other solutions, with rapid transfer to the inverter in the case of mains power failure, thus ensuring no loss of data or disturbance to output. This makes the system more reliable from the load's side. Products that include this technology are the Eaton 93PM and 9395P UPSs.

Easy Capacity Test (ECT) technology

ECT technology enables the user to test their entire power train under full load stress without the need for an external load, thereby reducing the need for dummy loads on installation sites which can give energy savings by making use of idle power. Products that include this technology are the Eaton 93E and 9395P UPSs.

Hot Sync technology

With HotSync technology multiple UPSs can be paralleled for increased power capability. The advantage of HotSync technology is that there is no need to purchase an oversized UPS to cope with potential future demands. It is possible to start from a single module and add power when required. Products that include this technology are the BladeUPS, Eaton 9PX, 9155, 93E, 93PM, 93PS, 9395P UPSs.

Advanced Battery Management (ABM) technology

ABM increases the life of batteries by employing a three-stage charging technique, thereby reducing waste and materials. By eliminating the need for constant charging ABM also helps to reduce energy consumption and extend battery life. Products that include this technology are the BladeUPS, Eaton 5P, 5PX, 5SC, 9130, 9130 RM, 9SX, 9PX (1-3 kVA), 9PX (5-22 kVA), 9155, 93E, 93PM, 93PS and 9395P UPS.

Hot Swappable batteries

This technology allows batteries to be 'hot swapped'; replaced or removed one string at a time while the equipment is still running, which reduces battery waste and minimises downtime. Products that include this technology are the BladeUPS, Eaton 5130, 5P, 5PX, EX, 9130, 9130 RM, 9SX, 9PX (1-3 kVA) and 9PX (5-22 kVA) UPSs.

EcoControl technology

EcoControl automatically disables peripherals when the master drive is turned off, allowing for up to 30 per cent energy savings. This innovative technology can play a strong role in helping to reduce utility bills. Products that include this technology are the Eaton Protection Station, Eaton Ellipse ECO and Eaton Ellipse PRO.

We take into account the environmental effects of the packaging and the end-of-life processing of our products and to aid more responsible dismantling, end-of-life instructions are available for recyclers.

Up to 90% of lead-acid batteries are recycled and majority of the battery material can be used to make new batteries.
